Smorzando [19 Mar 2007|04:36pm]

[adapted from Rezsõ Seress’ “Gloomy Sunday”]

Autumn, ember colored leaves quit each tree—
On all of the earth—love’s dead now I fear.
The wind wails and trembles with stinging tear;
Spring, that came, went, won’t come again for me.
True tears, despair, are but token gesture
For people:—greedy, heartless, and wicked …

Love, love is dead.

The world ends; hope is an empty figure.
Debris of cities, shrapnel’s percussion,
Red meadows of blood and rank rot of meat:
Everywhere—cadavers litter the street.
Hear, Lord, this little whispered orison:—
People sin, yet, not knowing what they’ve done …

The world is gone.

"To Dress a Shadow"

The hardest thing is to surround it, to fix its limit where it fades into the penumbra along its edge. To choose it from among the others, to separate it from the light that all shadows secretly, dangerously, breathe. To begin to dress it casually, not moving too much, not frightening or dissolving it: this is the initial operation where nothingness lies in every move. The inner garments, the transparent corset, the stockings that compose a silky ascent up the thighs. To all these it will consent in momentary ignorance, as if imagining it is playing with another shadow, but suddenly it will become troubled, when the skirt girds its waist and it feels the fingers that button the blouse between its breasts, brushing the neck that rises to disappear in dark flowing water. It will repulse the gesture that seems to crown it with a long blonde wig (that trembling halo around a nonexistent face! And you must work quickly to draw its mouth with cigarette embers, slip on the rings and bracelets that define its hands, as it indecisively resists, its newborn lips murmuring the immemorial lament of one awakening to the world. It will need eyes, which must be made from tears, the shadow completing itself to better resist and negate itself. Hopeless excitement when the same impulse that dressed it, the same thirst that saw it take shape from confused space, to envelop it in a thicket of caresses, begins to undress it, to discover for the first time the shape it vainly strives to conceal with hands and supplications, slowly yielding, to fall with a flash of rings that fills the night with glittering fireflies.

They Say

They’ve said I can judge upcoming rain
by the turning of the leaves
still, the rain pours puddles
before I can retrieve my umbrella.
They’ve warned me, stay away from all trees
hills, baths and metal during lightening storms
but have yet to protect me from his eyes-
stormy grey, nor, how to hide what I feel inside.

Please Intrude [01 Jun 2005|08:08pm]

Please intrude
aggressively rude
Destroy the delicacy
I thought I had pursued
Refuse to smile
darken my mood
until I look down
miserably fooled
and overly protective
fingers clamped clumsily
Then, take what is mine
introducing me to you.

Make This Simple Test [28 May 2005|01:25pm]

Blindfold yourself with some suitable object. If time permits remain still for a moment. You may feel one or more of your senses begin to swim back toward you in the darkness, singly and without their names. Meanwhile have someone else arrange the products to be used in a row in front of you. It is prefereable to have them in identical containers, though that is not necessary. Where possible, perform the test by having the other person feed you a portion — a spoonful — of each of the products in turn, without comment.
Guess what each one is, and have the other person write down what you say.
Then remove the blindfold. While arranging the products the other person should have detached part of the label or container from each and placed it in front of the product it belongs to, like a title. This bit of legend must not contain the product's trade name nor its generic name, nor any suggestion of the product's taste or desirability. Or price. It should be limited to that part of the label or container which enumerates the actual components of the product in question.
    Thus for instance:
"Contains dextrinzed flours, cocoa processed with alkali, non-fat dry milk solids, yeast nutrients, vegetable proteins, agar, hydrogenated vegetable oil, dried egg yolk, GUAR, sodium cyclamate, soya lecithin, imitation lemon oil, acetyl tartaric esters of mono- and diglycerides as emulsifiers, polysorbate 60, 1/10 of 1% of sodium benzoate to retard spoilage."
"Contains anhydrated potatoes, powdered whey, vegetable gum, emulsifier (glycerol monostearate), invert syrup, shortening with freshness preserver, lactose, sorbic acid to retard mold growth, caramel color, natural and artificial flavors, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bisulfite."
"Contains beef extract, wheat and soya derivatives, food starch-modified, dry sweet whey, calcium carageenan, vegetable oil, sodium phosphates to preserve freshness, BHA, BHT, prophylene glycol, pectin, niacinamide, artificial flavor, U.S. certified color."
There should not be less than three separate products.
Taste again, without the blindfold. Guess again and have the other person record the answers. Replace the blindfold. Have the other person change the order of the products and again feed you a spoonful of each.
Guess again what you are eating or drinking in each case (if you can make the distinction). But this time do not stop there. Guess why you are eating or drinking it. Guess what it may do for you. Guess what it was meant to do for you. By whom. When. Where. Why. Guess where in the course of evolution you took the first step toward it. Guess which of your organs recognize it. Guess whether it is welcomed to their temples. Guess how it figures in their prayers. Guess how completely you become what you eat. Guess how soon. Guess at the taste of locusts and wild honey. Guess at the taste of water. Guess what the rivers see as they die. Guess why the babies are burning. Guess why there is silence in heaven. Guess why you were ever born.

Dark and Light Angel People Crap Blah. [30 Apr 2005|10:21pm]

The light kisses the dark,

Turning the room into an uncomfortable grey

They examine each other

Eyes raping, understanding sought

Outreached hands, grasping hidden truths

Coiled, crooked hands constructing lies

Nails of the first gleam in the dull light

While cuticles of the latter accumulate infection

Skin tones vary, predictably -

Morning’s first pale sunshine,

Dusk’s last light

The darkened shifts, nervously

While the other is the manifestation of enlightenment

And has nothing to hide

Known is the futile act of war,

Yet the act of surrender much less plausible

To each willful adversary

I wrote it as a contest piece for www.allpoetry.com

The sites pretty cool, I guess. It really makes me want to improve a million fold so I can win all the contests and have a million points.

Haha. <3.

Rip it apart! It's the only way I'll learn. [16 Apr 2005|11:10pm]

When all is picturesque

Steal the pretty painting...
Obliterate it.
How nice it would be,
to sip it all away.
Coping... its...
never been a strong point.
Every painting should have a frame,
a place to hang it from,
eyes to be admired by,
but most of all what defines a painting:
Is paint.
You can not have a portrait without it.
The lines, contours, colors, placement,
that, love, is what makes a painting unequaled.
Without its own unique structure it would be no different,
as a matter of fact it would be just the same.
Keep in mind,
canvas is frail and weak:
Easy to obliterate.
That could very well be what you want,
when the painting has a serenity you haven’t got.
